Our journey started back in 2011 when our founder who was a techpreneur embarked on a journey to introduce plastic money in the rural areas as a means of promoting financial inclusion drawing from experience of international markets. It is through the research conducted that revealed that the poor women in the rural areas of the coastal region of Kenya lacked the very basic leave alone using of plastic money and the idea of setting up a micro credit institution was born.

It was revealed that a number of microfinance institutions had attempted to set shop in these rural areas but they didn’t really serve the very poor people for fear of them defaulting on loan payments and had no collateral that the institutions could use. Majority of them also charged exorbitant interest on their loans making the women in the areas sink deep in poverty. A solution was found to help the women come out of abject poverty so that they can be able to afford at least 2 meals in a day, take their children to school, and even acquire wealth for their families.

Vision

To be the most preferred development and financial partner serving the rural and peri-urban marginalized women & youth.

Mission

To economically empower marginalized women and youth by efficiently providing enhanced accessible financial and non-financial services to Kenyans from grassroots in order to lift them out of poverty.

Hazina Development Trust Limited was incorporated in October 2011 and opened its first door in Kibaoni / Takaungu Village in Kilifi County providing interest free micro credit facilities to women and youth in the area and its neighboring villages. The demand for its services expanded and enquiries from different parts of the region started streaming in necessitating setting up offices in different parts of the region. Hazina has so far served over 10,000 families in Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa counties and with 5 branches in Kilifi, Mariakani, Town Centre, Likoni and Msambweni. Our target is to have presence in every county of the coastal region by end of 2025 and we later expand to other regions in areas where they are largely ignored by other financial institutions.

Following the enactment of the Company Act No. 17 of 2015 accompanied by various regulatory changes and our desire to make a massive impact in our societies, the structure of Hazina has over the years been evolving into a group of companies and now the company has transformed into a purely microfinancing arm of the group.

The broad objective of the group is to economically empower youth and women through accessibility of financial and non-financial services. Hazina approaches its development work with the conviction that the power and will to improve the quality of life lies with the communities in which we work. We believe in directing our effort in helping people to strengthen their capacity and increase their momentum as they work towards realizing their potential in improving their quality of life. Hazina equips and mobilizes youth and women to achieve equality and equity. Their equality and equity are essential to building stronger families, communities, and societies.

We envision a world in which youth and women are able to fulfill their dreams free from the constraints of poverty and inequality and their full worth is realized and valued and we walk the journey to achieve this dream through provision of financial education and business advisory to our communities; provides responsible, ethical, & inclusive livelihood financing which includes credit, savings, insurance, and investments. Our financing operations are in line with Shariah Financing as well as in compliance with clients protection principles as developed by the Social Protection Task Force (SPTF).

The group has also established other entities to address different economical needs of our communities not limited to business training and advisory, insurance, investments, and education.

The group works in three strategic themes, or programme focus areas, through which we strive to help build capacity of marginalized, underserved, and disadvantaged communities. The themes are:

Through promotion of entrepreneurship. We will nurture a movement of compassionate and passionate entrepreneurs. We train young men and women using an Expanded Curriculum on Entrepreneurship so as to reduce poverty and inequality through policy-oriented research and active engagement on development issues with the community and the general public.

Hazina believes economic development begins with community development and is only sustainable if it comes from and is supported by the members of these communities. Also, through their programs, Hazina aims to raise international awareness of the economic challenges in Africa and support cross-cultural communities in finding more effective solutions to development issues.

Within which we promote gender equality, good governance, and social accountability in management of public resources and affairs. We share a conviction that individuals are capable of advancing human security, environmental stewardship, and improved quality of life. Hazina’s goal is to cause policy, institutional, and individual change that will improve the lives of women and youth. Through periodic surveys, people throughout the country express their views based on five thematic areas: Service Delivery, Economic Development, Human Rights, Gender Equity and Democratization. Hazina does this by facilitating debates on fundamental and provocative issues as well as by building the individual and organizational capacities of those working for youth and women’s empowerment and social justice.

In the fields of social and cultural development, climate change, and environmental sustainability with an emphasis on the well-being of women and youth. Hazina also promotes cross-cultural understanding, tolerance, and human rights in cooperation with regional and national institutions.
